Review of The Lords of Salem (2013) by Aaron O — 10 May 2014
Rob Zombie will always be a musician who directs music videos, trying to direct feature-length films. While I appreciated 1,000 Corpses/Devil's Rejects for their schlock value, I was ultimately disappointed in his previous films.
However, Zombie's music video style actually works this time around. I was genuinely creeped out by Lords of Salem's haunting atmosphere and dark mood. This movie isn't for gorehounds, it's a heavy derivative of classic horror films like the Omen - and though I haven't seen it entirely - Rosemary's Baby, with a bit of Argento's kinda visual style to it.
But it's a helluva trip, to say the least. One of those movies you'll either love or hate.
