Review of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) by Sanchayan S — 04 Jan 2014
The Middle chapter of the epic historical fantasy series "Lord Of The Rings" pushes the envelope of the franchise even more and creates more of the cinema history that the first chapter had started.
After an year of the success of the Fellowship of The Ring comes the "Two Towers" and well this not only surpasses the above but extends it. Deeper character levels, more characters that we start to care about immediately , a battle which will probably hold as the best battle shown on screen of all time : the suspense , the buildup and the performances by Liv Tyler , Viggo Mortensen , Ian Mckellen and Sean Astin are breathtaking.
With brilliant score underlying this time with even more epic lines from Howard Shore and new themes the movie sounds brilliant. Now we come to the highlight of the movie : GOLLUM . Certainly this has got to be the most significant digital achievement till date , thanks to WETA Gollum is not only one of the intricately crafted character in terms of visuals but also layers.
An extraordinary performance by Andy Serkis seriously stands out as it brings a digital creature to life and we care about this character more than anybody and the pity which plays so essential in the movie is now on the surface: we literally feel sorry for him and we can see the effect the ring had on him and how everything could have been different had not the ring found him .
I Can go on and on about this beautiful character created by Tolkien and further expressed by Fran Walsh and Phillipa Boyens but that would take pages and it still won't be enough . The costumes as usual are perfect and astonishing .
In all you got to love middle earth as how it is shown : Peter Jackson with his award winning cinematographer Andrew Lesnie continues to show Middle Earth with their full might. The Towers stands as one of the all time greats in the history of cinema and one can only expect what comes next.
