Review of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) by Huw G — 21 Feb 2014
The Two Towers is slightly less well-rounded than the first one, but I still give a lot of credit to Jackson for putting forward a great piece of cinema for the middle chapter of a trilogy, which is not an easy task.
The Helm's Deep battle sequence is, as expected, truly epic, and it is well supplemented by another set piece involving the Ents. When there are so many faces and people and races, it is hard to appreciate the human cost (and cost to other races) of the entire tragedy the ring has wrought.
Fortunately, Jackson didn't forget to humanize the characters involved, up to the heroes driving the action and down to the petrified infants clumsily wielding swords to survive the terrors of the night.
This is what kept me interested in the outcome and vested in the movie as a whole.
