The second movie of the Lord of the Ring trilogy is also the fastest paced and most adventurous one, surpassing the predecessor in storytelling qualities and having fun with its characters as they and the story had been established with The Fellowship of the Ring episode.
Peter Jackson once again uses the groundbreaking special effects to make everything look magical and fantastic, but does not shy away from adding darker undertones that find a personification in the paranoid character of Gollum.
