Review of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) by Sanchayan S — 04 Jan 2014
The epic conclusion of the most beloved franchise is really "epic" in the true sense. Providing an entire palette of glorious moments this three and a half hour adaptation not only brings everything of the franchise to a close but does it with such elegance and magnificence .
Peter Jackson shows his masterclass in every aspect of the movie. The cast is brilliant , the performances amazing specially from Sean Astin (Sam) , Billy Boyd (Pippin) , Sir Ian Mckellen (Gandalf The White) and Elijah wood, the breathtaking and groundbreaking visual effects that will stand out for a long long time and Gollum: Andy Serkis defines the ending of the movie.
Every other minute there will come a scene which will tinkle your spine and by the time when Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) cries "For Frodo..." and charges the suicide battle with a tear in his eye , we as viewers all feel as one of the soldiers fighting for the cause , fighting for all the themes that have been set up in the movies and played out so beautifully and fighting for evil.
Moments of friendship, courage ,leadership and death becomes the primary themes of the entire franchise. This chapter despite taking 11 oscars and a entire truck of awards is under appreciated . As this not only is one of the all time greatest films but also will have a deep impact of anyone's life for the days to come.
The score of the movie is probably in my opinion the best score ever written for a motion capture (Howard Shore) and not only that every musical note has its purpose whether it is portraying a certain feeling or representing a certain section of a culture : the score stands out .
The Battles : The Best battle created by any film maker on screen with some seriously astonishing moments developed by WETA. The costumes designed by Sir Richard Taylor requires special mention as the amount of detailing that had gone into the movie representing various cultures of Middle Earth .
Every element of the movie is unique and needs to be acclaimed. In my opinion This movie becomes the Best Of All Time taking over The Godfather.
