Review of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) by John P — 27 Jun 2016
When Peter Jackson ends a trilogy, my gawd, this motherfucker does NOT hold back! I mean he goes all out with the fighting and the talking and the suspense and everything else that goes with a fantasy book movie like this. If you are reading this then you already know that I am at the halfway point in completing my review in the J.R.R. Tolkien/Peter Jackson movie saga and I can tell you right now that I am just getting started. The Return of the King was the third and final installment in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy that went on to make over one billion dollars at the box office and won eleven Academy Awards including Best Picture. Now that is what I call one hell of a film for its time. The only real shame I will say about The Lord of the Rings series is that there were no other sequels after the books ended to carry on the film franchise. However from what I hear Tolkien originally wanted to write a sequel called The New Shadow, but he later dropped the idea for whatever reason. So let's wrap this trilogy of epicness so I can get started on the next one.
Where do I begin with this? Once again, everything is great in here from the dialogue to the casting and even nonstop action that goes along with it. For a movie that stretches a little over three hours you never get bored by it because there is always something going on in here. All of these actors in here gave it their all and there is not one disappointing moment within their roles. I cannot think of anything negative about this other than the endings. I remember when I watched this in theaters thinking how painfully long and drawn out the endings were, but after ten years and re-watching this again I have come to the realization of how brilliantly done it was. Especially the ending where it just wrapped everything up for you like a nice little bow on top of that perfect Christmas present. Overall, you are going to enjoy the hell out of this film if you have already seen the previous two because this is how trilogies, adaptations of books, and fantasy films should be done. With the time and patience that both the writers and the director use to utilize to their full potential and that is why I give this masterpiece a solid five star rating.
