Review of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) by Richard T — 27 Jun 2016
The only way to see the conclusion to Tolkien's epic. (the screen version leaves out too many important bits eg Mouth of Sauron !). No other conclusion to a trilogy has as much excitement and as many emotional payoffs- it runs the risk of being indulgent.
Its as if Peter Jackson asked the fans "Okay, what would you like to see ?" and then delivered in spades. My favourite bit, Theoden (Bernard Hill)'s speech before the kamikaze charge of the Rohirrim.
Yes, this version is 4 hours long, but why not ? The best way to watch it, is to take a day and watch the first two films and then cap it off with this one, you feel like you've been on the journey with Frodo.
Yes, this is the height of nerdiness, but I don't care !
