Review of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) by Patricia W — 09 Sep 2017
It's no wonder this film won so many awards because it is the crowning glory of the trilogy, no pun intended. Everything comes to a head in a very satisfying conclusion in this very emotional finale.
The acting is still stellar across the board with Eowyn, played by Miranda Otto, really coming into her own as a valiant fighter, Sean Astin has a standout performance as the ever faithful Sam and John Noble joins the cast as Denethor, a disturbed individual still mourning the loss of his favourite son.
There are so many great moments in this film: Frodo and Sam's interactions with Shelob, the giant spider; the battle of Pelennor fields, where Sauron's armies throw everything from giant elephants known as Mumakil and the Witch King of Angmar at Gondor to destroy the world of men; and the final push to destroy the ring at mount doom.
The Return of the King raps up a great story of bravery, love and proof that no matter how small or insignificant you think you are, you can change the world for the better. Visually stunning, fantastically written and with a great deal of heart, this rounds up one of the best film trilogies of all time.
