Review of The Lord of the Rings (1978) by Andy D — 10 Oct 2009
I simply love this, largely because it reminds me massively of my childhood, and was my first experience of 'The Lord Of The Rings' in any form. I always remember wishing that Bakshi had gone on to actually finish the film, or films, as I desperately wanted to know what happened next. Of course, that desire to complete the story ultimately lead me to read the books, and be totally blown away by them.
In comparison to the now legendary Peter Jackson live-action versions, this little piece of animation really seems dated, but it is not without its charms. Wonderfully voiced, great cast, great score, great atmosphere, it sticks pretty closely to the story for 'The Fellowship Of The Ring' part of the story - albeit nipping along at a pretty hefty pace - but unfortunately starts to get a little confused when it gets to 'The Two Towers'. And what the hell is going on with Boromir being dressed like some Viking marauder???
Anyhoo...great fun, brings back great memories.
