Review of The Lord of the Rings (1978) by Jonathan G — 02 Sep 2010
Although I prefer the Peter Jackson films, this is worth watching and there are even elements in it that are closer to the book than there were in the Jackson versions. One thing creative and weird at the same time is that it combines the fellowship of the ring and the two towers into one movie.
The characters are also closer to J.R.R. Tolken's books like with Frodo. In the Jackson version, he's a little to vulnerable, whereas in this version, he's able to defend himself more. Like when he's running from the ring wraiths even though weak and can barely stay awake he actually talks back and even intimidates them.
Aragorn is also very different in both versions. In the Bakshi film he's closer to what he was like in the books in terms of being a ranger and a king. He could be a bada** but also very diplomatic.
Gandolf is good in both the Jackson and Bakshi films, but I tilt toward the Jackson version because the Bakshi version is a little to over the top. Overall, Bakshi's Lord of the Rings isn't as good as the Jackson's films but it is a pretty interesting film to watch.
