Review of The Lord of the Rings (1978) by Jeremy K — 03 May 2011
Falters where Jackson's version triumphs. This lacks the scope, atmosphere, and character that the 200-2003 trilogy has. Ralph Bakshi was never very good at anything outside of his streetwise, x-rated, admittedly excellent animated dramas, but here he truly showed his weakness in weaving a compelling fantasy narrative.
This Ralph Bakshi is closer to the defeated, broken animator who directed Cool World than the cocky, rough-hewn voice of urban filmmaking that made Fritz the Cat, Heavy Traffic, or Coonskin.
