Review of The Lord of the Rings (1978) by Tero H — 21 Oct 2012
My list of pluses and minuses for this animation of the Lord of the Rings:
+ nice animation, very lively overall.
+ Sam Gamgee is funny and best character in this animated movie..
+ the faces of the human and hobbit characters are really nicely animated.
+ Long movie but the great story makes it easy to watch despite that.
+ Nice music.
- the orcs are too undetailed and a bit clumsily done if one may say so..
- the backgrounds in the animation are mostly too undetailed and dark.
- goes through the Book's events too quickly.
- omits a bit too much of the book. For instance, the omitting of Bombadil is sort of understandable for the movie, but really not so most of the final events in the book..
- this film ends at the Battle of the Helm's Deep, which leaves a lot of the book unexplored. In other words it ends abruptly, and includes only about half of the book (of which I am a huge fan).
Despite its shortcomings, its a nice animated film about the great classic book.
