Review of The Lord of the Rings (1978) by Steve G — 26 Nov 2012
In fact Fellowship of the Ring, a very condensed Two Towers and no Return of the King. Feels very 70s with many of the characters wearing mop-top hair-do's, to the point where I wouldn't have been surprised if a mirror-ball had lowered from the ceiling of the Prancing Pony as the Bree-folk boogied on down.
Has a more understated quality than the recent live-action trilogy which I think suits the story better at times. Nonetheless it's obvious that Peter Jackson was heavily influenced by this telling since all the major beats of this screenplay appear in the later films.
Ralph Bakshi clearly ran into production problems since the Two Towers is heavily condensed and the last book is not covered at all. This is a shame because I find this film makes a charming alternative to Mr Jackson's offerings, and its a pity Bakshi didn't get to explore his vision for Tolkiens opus across three separate films.
