Review of The Lookout (2007) by Alex C — 18 Jan 2009
One of my favorite movies of 2007. Scott Frank, an acclaimed screenwriter, provides a small yet superb directorial debut. Joseph Gordon-Levitt shows why he's one of the best young actors as he wondefully plays Chris, a young man with short term memory loss caused from a car accident from back when he was in college.
While he works as a janitor at a bank, he's approached by a man played by Matthew Goode. He seems to take a liking to Chris, but it turns out he's more intrested in having an inside man in a bank robbery.
The film really is a special one. There is tention, turmoil, and it really questions the ideas of forgiveness and trust. And Jeff Daniels is also great in this film as Chris's blind friend and roommate; it's a nice play on the" blind old wise man" role.
And "The Lookout" is also just a beautiful looking film; the cinematography is really crisp. Overall, this is without question one of the best small-budget, indie films of the decade.
