Review of The Lookout (2007) by Jacob D — 26 Jul 2010
"Whoever has the money, has the power.".
The Lookout is an unsettling and haunting psychological crime thriller. It's a disturbing story of manipulation and seduction. A gritty and stylish film from first time director Scott Frank. Frank has done work on previous movies including Out Of Sight and Get Shorty, The Lookout was his directorial debut, a damn good debut. At the heart of this film is an utterly dark concept that leaves the viewer with a constant sense of doom and gloom to come.
The story follows Chris Pratt, played flawlessly by Joseph Gordon Levitt, a once promsing high school golden boy who was at the center of a tragic accident. An accident that left him unable to perform routine tasks, and also left him unable to sequence events in order as time passes. Chris runs into a manipulative con man, played by Matthew Goode, who promises him a better life if he agrees to help rob the bank that he works at. Needless to say of coiurse, everything spirals out of control into a spider web of deception, high tension, and extreme suspense.
A very intelligent movie, written brilliantly by Scott Frank. The acting is top notch all around with a cast that fits this film perfectly. Highly recommended if you are a fan of crime thrillers or psychological brain bending stories.
