Review of The Lookout (2007) by C L — 11 Dec 2010
This has a great script with a lot of suspense. It's not quite as perfect as the script for LA Confidential--one of my favorite contemporary screenplays--but it's really tightly plotted, and the way it works up to the climax with all the plot points is really exciting to watch.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt gives me another reason to like him with a great performance as a man with a brain injury, and Matthew Goode gives me one reason to like him--what with his bland performance in Watchmen and his usual choice of terrible romantic comedies--with his well developed and multidimensional villain character.
The only weak point acting-wise is Sacha Baron Cohen's wife. I just don't like her. Not even enough to know what her name is. She brings the same nuance and sensibility to her performance in this suspense thriller as she does to a movie like Confessions of a Shopaholic.
There's even a scene with a conversation between her and Jeff Daniel's character that is supposed to be suspenseful, but seriously fucks up the tone of the movie for a little bit because she's playing it like a ditzy girl in the big city type.
Everything else about this movie is very tightly woven and competently executed. It is definitely an under the radar gem.
