Review of The Lookout (2007) by Anna L — 26 May 2011
THE LOOKOUT, directorial debut from screenwriter Scott Frank (OUT OF SIGHT, MINORITY REPORT, DEAD AGAIN), is a thoroughly engaging crime drama with a terrific lead performance from Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Gordon-Levitt plays a former high school hockey star who suffered a head injury as a result of a car accident, who now works as a night janitor at small-town Kansas bank. He's befriended by some shady characters, who can only be up to no good (hey, they are!).
Reminiscent of 90s neo-noirs such as ONE FALSE MOVE and A SIMPLE PLAN (it would also make a nice companion to MEMENTO), the first two-thirds of the film is great, it only falters in the final act. While the last act doesn't betray the rest of the film, the conclusion is plays out somewhat by-the-numbers.
Otherwise, The Lookout is one of the best neo-noirs of the last decade.
