Review of The Longshots (2008) by Aaron J — 15 Feb 2010
Surely this film succumbs to almost all of the sport movie cliche's but, it has a lot of heart and a spunky performance from the ever-so-charming Keke Palmer.
Palmer, doesn't have a lot of friends, reads a lot, and is constantly being made fun of. She doesn't do anything but read, go to school, and watch tv. Her dream was to be a Model. Her dead-beat daddy is nowhere to be found, and her mom desperately wants Palmer to have some kind of relationship. So, she starts to hang out with her uncle, played by Ice Cube, after school. She basically hates it. But, in the process he teaches her how to play football. She eventually gets really good, and Ice Cube wants her to try out for the pop-warner football team. But, she is a girl and girls don't play football!?!?!
She makes the team, and is great. They make it too the pop-warner super bowl where her daddy shows up days before she leaves promising her he'll be there. But of course he is nowhere to be found on game-day.
This film certainly doesn't overcome any cliches, but it was a nice little touching sports film featuring an upcoming actress who is fun to watch. The supporing characters were fun also.
A nice family film.
