Review of The Longest Day (1962) by April M — 19 Jan 2008
If I had seen this when it first came out, I might have given it a perfect rating, but having seen this now after seeing HBO's Band of Brothers and other war movies, I'm harder to impress. I do, however, like the sequences with all the extras on the beach and on the street and bridge where the hotel and casino were.
That's old school movie-making. I also watched this late at night when I really wanted to sleep, with H.E. doing commentary like a pop-up video, telling me what was technically and historically correct and incorrect, pausing the playback every now and then to give me the background story.
So in a sense, it was also The Longest Movie for me. Still, a really great film, a must see for WWII history buffs. DVRed from AMC.
