Review of The Longest Day (1962) by Dan I — 27 May 2008
This is easily one of the finest war dramas ever made. The film was originally released in 1963, and tells the story of events leading up to and through the Allied invasion of France on June 6, 1944. The story is told from many perspectives, American, British, French, and German.
Just about every major acting name in Hollywood you can think of had some role in this film, Robert Mitchum, John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Sean Connery, Richard Burton, and a long list of others.
Amazingly, in spite of the overcrowded list of stars, the film keeps it all together, and excels in the process.
I've seen this film several times, but every time I come across it playing on a movie channel, I find myself sitting down to watch again.
