The staggering scope of the production and all star cast lend an appropriate grandiloquence to the film, which aims to be the Greatest Generation's definitive cinematic telling of its most iconic day.
And so it arguably remains. The realism of the battle sequences (as avowed by interspersed newsreel footage) are unmatched by today's more histrionic renditions, and the effect is at once more stunning and thought provoking.
