Review of The Longest Day (1962) by Pierre Y — 24 Sep 2010
Classic! That is what come out of my mind at the moment. A knowledgeable but yet entertaining classic movie about one of the most memorable day of the 20 century, the six June 1944 in Normandy. These day that had seen the fall of the Nazi regime and the sun of liberty rise over Europe.
Taken back on this very day,the longest day known by all as the D-day or more technically as Operation overlord we become witnesses of history and the reasons that provoke and make it.Those reasons that are determinant but so insignificant that the history books never mention of them. For ,many times, the difference between the victory and the defeat lies in audacity small details and the courage of some.A few people know it but if strategically the war was certainly loosed by the Nazi the longest day could have turned in favour of the germen and allowed the world war two to last a few years more.History could have been changed from that day and the word directed to another path in the infinity possibility of the human destiny .In fact by showing us such a true and entertaining insight in the military events of the operation overlord the longest day, under a perfect direction a stellar cast and a great screenplay, makes alive one of the biggest moment of history and cinema for us to remember. A sentence remains after the end of this great movie and it is said by major general Gunther blumentritt"This is history. We are living an historical moment. We are going to lose the war because our glorious Führer has taken a sleeping pill and is not to be awakened. Sometimes I wonder which side God is on.".
