Review of The Long Riders (1980) by Kelechi O — 15 Dec 2010
This film glorifies the James Brothers (Jesse and Frank) and the Youngers so much that it hits its credibility. And the last several minutes of the film (which includes Jesse getting shot by Robert Ford) seemed as if the directors tried to include too much about their story - ultimately that sequence was gratuitous.
All that said, the film is interesting. It delves into a tension between 19th Century Missourians (portrayed as being ever suspicious of authority) and the (depicted as brutal, as usual) Pinkerton Agency (not too different a theme from other films in this genre).
And its action sequences (including the disastrous bank robbery attempt near the end of the film) can get the juices flowing. And all of the cast play their respective roles well.
