Review of The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996) by Tom R — 25 Dec 2011
(4 Stars) The Long Kiss Goodnight is not a Christmas classic... but it is a fun action blockbuster from the writer of awesome Christmas action films Lethal Weapon and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and the director of Die Hard 2.
It just happens to set around Christmas and has more to do with the plot of Kill Bill and Wanted than the birth of Christ or presents under the tree. It's definitely an escapist movie with its improbable but very stunning action scenes.
The dialogue sounds very, VERY much like Hollywood blockbuster dialogue: it's very swift, it's very funny, but no one would ever talk like it. Geena Davis is believable as an innocent small town school teacher and a trained assassin; they could have easily gotten anyone and made a movie centered around explosives, but they found a credible actress.
.. good for them. Samuel L. Jackson is also at his Samuel L. Jackson-iest and has a lot of funny lines of dialogue. The Long Kiss Goodnight is not for everyone, specifically those who demand dismal realism, but if you want to watch one of the very best 90's action movies, see this one.
