Review of The Long, Hot Summer (1958) by Ilsa L — 01 Jul 2013
Great movie about a supposed drifter with real aspirations and the family that hires him. Orson Welles is perfect as the manipulative patriarch of the Varner family and the chemistry between Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward is undeniable.
Lee Remick is also impressive as Eula. The screenplay is first class as is Martin Ritt's direction. The only real fly in the ointment is Orson Welles' make up. What a conspicuous mess! Otherwise, this film is highly recommended!
