Review of The Long Goodbye (1973) by Prasad P — 31 Jul 2008
Altman's got some good ideas, and peppers the film with interesting touches. The assorted tributes to noirs of the past are particularly clever. As is the repetitive use of the theme song in different variations.
But I don't like Elliot Gould. I think he might actually be a terrible actor. I also didn't think the climax flowed naturally from the character or the story. I get Altman's point, but I don't think he sells it well at all.
Overall, I guess it's entertaining, but Gould ruins it for me.
