Review of The Long Goodbye (1973) by J J — 26 May 2011
Elliot Gould is extremely likeable as Philip Marlowe, the journey he goes on in this film reminded me a lot of the Dude's in The Big Lebowski. In this film we follow a cool, fast talking, hard boiled private investigator whereas in Lebowski we follow a chunky stoner who sits on his ass all day and goes bowling from time to time.
What really surprised me here was Sterling Hayden's acting, I love the guy but I didn't think he had such a great peformance in him. Surely one of the best portrayals of a drunken nutcase? The impressionist guy provided some hilarious scenes, especially the "Walter Brennan" bit.
