Review of The Lone Ranger (2013) by Sean P — 25 May 2014
I'm going to say it, I liked this film. I thought it was enjoyable and entertaining especially when Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer were on screen together.
That's not to say this is great cinema, the film uses Pirates of the Caribbean sensibilities for a Mask of Zorro storyline. The secondary characters aren't particularly memorable and are stock characters. The film is overly long and the use of Han Zimmer's Lone Ranger score in the final half-hour made the film more cartoonish than it should have been. Depp's Tonto was criticised, yet at times in the style of Captain Jack he was the best thing in his scenes.
Overall an enjoyable if archetypal film, with good laughs offered by both Depp and Hammer, the film sags when the two are not on screen, however it is not the disaster the critics make it out to be.
