Review of The Lone Ranger (2013) by Cynna K — 09 Mar 2014
I finally rented it on DVD and I was sort of disenchanted within the first 30 minutes. At the hour mark I was trying to keep interested. At the 1.5 hour mark I was pretty much done. I fast forwarded through most of the movie at 3x pace - just to get to the end.
The fact that I cared enough to get to the end earned this movie 2 stars from me. Now, I do feel the acting on JD's part was good and I liked the way he played Tonto. The spirit horse was amazing.
Armie Hammer ( who ever he is I have no idea) was fine but I think a major actor with a recognizable identity matching Johnny Depp would have added to the film's interest level. The scenes with the little boy in the exhibit and the live older version of Tonto confused me until the end.
I actually liked the last few minutes of the movie. If I had written the script I would have started with the end and had the boy and Indian walk away with the man telling the story of the Lone Ranger and Tonto.
It would have been more straightforward and less confusing. I kept wondering, throughout the movie, if the little kid in the exhibit was The Lone Ranger as a kid, or if this kid was the son of the woman in the firm.
I was pretty confused - as stated. In the end, I wanted to like this movie but I was really just disappointed by its length. I loved the William Tell Overture and the end 30 minutes or so - which I did watch as 3x speed.
I may watch it again toward the end just to see the train / horse action parts.
