Review of The Lone Ranger (2003) by David H — 14 Nov 2014
Opportunity lost. We needed a revitalization of the original Ranger - justice unencumbered by selfishness or pathos, a figure who not only bypasses corruption and the petty desires of corrupt officials, villains, and the general populace alike, but spreads hope with silver bullets, and who unabashedly pursues not only what is right, but also what is good.
What a contrast that would have been with the selfish brutality of revenge fantasies we get from anti-heroes and vigilantes today. Instead, the film-makers were embarrassed by the paladin-with-a-gun motif and decided to mock that ethos, turning the Ranger into a clumsy, reluctant, idiotic sidekick.
When the Ranger actually gives the "Hi-ho Silver, away!", Tonto says "Don't ever do that again." What they meant was cynicism rules the day.
