I had low expectations, the pirates films (except for the original, and the 4th which are OK) were awful, all pointless heaps of boring nothing, with no actual story or purpose besides looking nice on the big screen. Ranger though is a marked improvement as it simply wants to entertain and for the most part it does. The action sequences are good fun and I never got bored once. Although not a great film by any stretch (the poor script hampers it at almost every turn), but compared to the pirate films, much more like it. The box office can be a strange force at times as I don't think this is too bad at all, unlike another, much more money consuming series I can mention.
