Review of The Lobster (2015) by Jacob F — 05 Jul 2017
The Lobster is an extremely relevant film, with a very timely messages. A film about how we struggle to find a partner to fit into society, and how we often settle for less. It's also about how we often focus on one specific interest or trait someone had, but ignore the rest.
It's hilarious, deeply sad, and violent. The performances are almost all fantastic, with each actor giving their character depth, and grounding them in reality, no matter how ridiculous they seem. John C Reily and Ben Whinshaw in particular are great, however I felt that Colin Ferrell was a bit too flat for his own good.
The first hour is incredibly engaging, and sets up the rules of this twisted dystopia quite brilliantly, however once the second switches into gear, we lose a lot of that excellent world building, and biting social commentary. Making it kind've a tough dull watch, however The ending is ambiguous and haunting, and makes up for some of that second hour.
