Review of The Lobster (2015) by Luke B — 14 Jun 2016
This film was terrific. Director Yorgos Lanthimos brings us a film that is part comedy, part romance and part social satire. I have never seen a dystopian future in a film such as this. Single people are sent to a hotel, where they have 45 days to find a partner otherwise they will be turned into an animal. That's totally insane.
The cinematography in this film is absolutely stunning. I loved the stillness of the shots, and the feeling of tranquility that the camera work creates. The score is terrifically placed, and is completely powerful. It's quite a jarring score, and it caught me off guard at first. The film is very peaceful and then it has this powerful score to go with it, and somehow Yorgos Lanthimos makes it work.
I truly think this is one of Colin Farrell's best performances, and yet it is one of his more simplistic performances. It reminded me of his performance that took place "In Bruges". He seems to pull of great performances in these sort of films. He is joined by great performances from Rachel Weisz and Lea Seydoux.
Overall this is a great film that takes a look at love and loneliness. It's an incredibly dark comedy, with terrific yet simple performances. The direction from Yorgos Lanthimos was great, and it excites me to see more from him in the future. The only negative thing I could say about this film, is that it's energy slows way down in the third act, and it could have probably been shorter in length.
