Review of The Lobster (2015) by Scott W — 21 Jun 2016
Well, it's different--you've got to give it credit for that. Putting some Bunuel. Charlie Kaufman and Stanley Kubrick into a blender and dialing "puree," this deadpan romance/black comedy bites off way more than it can chew, but points for ambition.
The shift halfway through the movie plot-wise, along with the uneasy mixture of genres and the over-the-top violence, makes this hard to recommend, but it does admittedly take root in your mind and lingers.
It probably would've been a short story for the ages (or, indeed, a classic 25-minute short film); as it is, there's always Farrell's lovely turn to carry you along till the way-too-ambiguous ending.
