Review of The Lobster (2015) by Kenneth C — 17 Sep 2016
Allegory is turned into a blunt audience torture device. The Lobster is smart to a point and a brilliant concept, but in pretending to philosophical satire set to swooning cello solos ... Wait for a dramatic pause .
.. It fails in ... Another unbearable pause ... Fails in delivery. I'm not buying monosyllabic voiceless and trite dialogue as artistry. Nor is the plot layered with meaning - it is hopelessly flat and trasparant.
Only a narcissist could love this. Thankfully for the cast and crew most critics live to be narcissistic pseudo-intellectuals. I am the darkest of humorists and I was not brought once to smile rather than wince in the agony of a failed joke.
It was sad, vacant, and a waste of precious time. I will grant it 2 stars out of respect for a studio who would at least try for absurd dark humor and for the occasional sparkle of wit. But it is no King Ubu.
Try again.
