Review of The Lobster (2015) by James R — 07 Jan 2017
This is a really weird one. The Lobster takes place in the near future where single people go to a place called The Hotel. Here at the hotel they have 45 days to fall in love and find a partner, or they're turned into an animal of their choice.
Strange concept, but for the most part it works. We follow David (Colin Farrell) as he is sent to the Hotel. David is a loner and finds it hard to connect with people. He meets a man with a lisp (John C.
Reilly) and a man who has a limp (Ben Whishaw). All three eventually have to turn to desperate measure to make sure they find the right person they are compatible with. The movie sort of has two acts.
The first act is by far the best with us seeing David go through the 45 days at the Hotel. After a series of events David leaves the Hotel and is out with the rebel Loners that live out in the wild. The Loners are people who don't have a partner.
Here David meets a woman who is near sighted (Rachel Weisz). David finally learns here the true meaning of love and longing...or maybe he does. Overall, the movie has a unique way of showing how relationships work and how people can become obsessed with finding the right one.
It's about being true to yourself and about how certain freedoms are sometimes overlooked. This won't be for everyone and I would say the second half is weaker than the first half, but its worth a look.
