Review of The Lobster (2015) by Quinnton U — 06 Aug 2017
Beautifully Dystopian....
This film truly has a great deal of romance, tension, and dark humor. This film gets a 5 star from me because it juggles so many perspectives and situations so well that the minor flaws hardly impact the story. First off, let ms say how amazing the performances were in this film, with heavy hitters like Farrell and Weisz clearly showing their talent once again, while surpise actors whom I did not expect in this film like Lea Seydoux and Ben Whishaw providing great conflict to an otherwise straightforward story, further developing the sort of broken dystopian society that outlays the film. The setting is clearly dystopian, as one side of the population is held in high standards of love and marriage, with those alone forced into a choice of love again or become an animal; the other side composed of loners roving the wilderness, seeking only to stay solitary their entire lives, away from the forced standards of society. The process to find love is quite entertaining, as well as the struggle to step ahead of others and earn a longer stay at the hotel. Plenty of characters, big and small, display various acts of desperation and hopelessness that shows how damaged the society makes the individuals. We see protagonists making disturbing acts to survive and thus extending the plot into its next act. The loner side of society proves to be just as disturbing and demanding as the love side. This film feels like a 3+hr long film yet it is only about 2hrs, however, despite the calm tone and quiet scenes, I found myself enthralled the entire film. Overall this film gripped me with amazing performances and a marvelous dystopian plot, with a heavy theme of love, loyalty, and choice that plays so deeply in every character, right up until the credits roll...
