Review of The Lives of Others (2006) by Sid C — 24 Mar 2010
A singular masterpiece from Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck whose writing and direction were impeccable. Powerful, poignant, beautiful. A political thriller intertwined with a love story. It follows the slow metamorphosis of a cold and unyielding Stasi captain into a caring and heroic surveillance officer.
Moved by the idealism and selfless love of his subjects, he eventually tries to save the couple he had been intent on watching for the Secret Police. At the same time it gives a troubling and haunting glimpse into the lives of East Germans in the years before and shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
It would have been a crime if this had not won an Oscar for Best Foreign Film.
