Review of The Lives of Others (2006) by Matt C — 26 Jun 2010
This is an excellent spy film that delivers an emotional whallop. Set in East Berlin in 1984, we follow a Stasi captain who is as unflinching an interrogator as they come. He's been unshaken in his duty to his country up to the point at which he has to listen in on the life of a famous screenplay writer.
He grows with the writer, questions his own motives, and ultimately helps the writer and his wife escape destruction at the hands of the state, yet isn't quite fully successful. The direction is great, the acting is stunning, and the finale left me very warm-hearted indeed.
One of the best films of 2006 without question.
