Review of The Lives of Others (2006) by Critic M — 05 Jan 2014
"The Lives of Others" is an intriguing foreign film about the intrusive surveilance of people suspected of disloyalty to the communist state of East germany. The actors Ulrich Muhe, Sebastian Koch and Martina Gedeck are the main focus and all give very passionate performances. Muhe who plays Capt. Weisler is the most convincing and undergoes the most character development.
Many critics (U.S.) seem to enjoy gushing about foreign films, infatuated with the mixture of subtitles and european coldness. I can however say that "The Lives of Others" is a very well made film with excellent performances. The unique, politically driven voyeurism is strange and realistic.
