Review of The Lives of Others (2006) by Subhro M — 23 Jul 2010
Shall I gift wrap it?
No it's for me.
It is one of the most subtle films of all time. it is not gaudy at all. it doesn't even try to be stylish at any moment. not even with camera. and yet it leaves you with an awe in a manner that can not be expressed but only experienced.
It tells a story of transition and growth of a character. what he has, what he could be and risking it all for nothing but compassion for a fellow human. other characters as well going through quite a bit journey themselves. the author of play is torn between art, love and his duty for his ideals. the actress struggles to keep her fame, addiction to pills and her love.
the whole story with the backdrop of struggle between GDR and west Germany makes a simple point. if story is this great, u don't need much of fan fare. just plane and simple story-telling would do.
