Review of The Lives of Others (2006) by Craig B — 12 Aug 2012
This was a fantastic film. Part historical fiction, part cautionary tale, it takes place in a period of history that I knew little about: segregated Germany in the 80's, before the fall of the Berlin Wall.
It is frightening that a country, right on the heels of the totalitarian Nazi regime of the 30-40s, would so willingly allow a similar government.
The film itself is tense and harrowing as secrets are either kept or forced out of arrested "criminals.".
Great acting by the entire cast and a surprisingly hopeful ending.
I definitely recommend this film to anyone that likes a good thriller and isn't turned off by foreign films (it is in German with subtitles).
