Review of The Lives of Others (2006) by Alejandra G — 16 Aug 2013
A great film set in East Germany before the fall of the Berlin Wall. A deeply moving story with some very current resonances, it is superbly directed and acted. Ulrich Muhe, as the secret police captain, gives a particularly brilliant performance.
This movie is in a sense a thriller but not in the sense of non-stop action and loud gun battles. Instead it is starkly intense, rather slow moving and concerned with the most basic concerns of human freedom, human isolation, and the possibilities of human reform.
Very highly recommended.
