Review of The Lives of Others (2006) by Niloo R — 26 Nov 2013
So brilliant! so subtle yet moving! the characterization, the performances, the directing, the writing, the set, even the title! everything works so seamlessly to create this world and the people within it.
the way this film takes you and literally PUTS you in "the lives of others" is extraordinary. one of the best exercises i've seen in character development - the film does it so simply, but it takes us and lets us see the the world through weisler's eyes, without even realizing it, just as he begins to see the world through dreyman's eyes.
his transformation is so subtle, we almost don't understand how it happens, but we feel it at a visceral level that make his actions completely plausible. i'll be thinking about this one for a while, just trying to decipher how it did what it did so effortlessly - good thing I have to see it again for another class in a week! definitely, DEFINITELY up there at least in my top 5 films, if not THE best film i've ever seen.
