Review of The Little Rascals Save the Day (2014) by Panta O — 18 Jul 2014

This direct-to-video comedy is an adaptation of Hal Roach's Our Gang, a series of short films of the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s (The Little Rascals was the name used on TV) which centred around the adventures of a group of neighbourhood children. The screenplay for this version was written by William Robertson and Alex Zamm , and Zamm directed it as well. The setting of this movie is updated compared to the 1994's theatrical release The Little Rascals.

The story starts on the last day of school before summer vacation, and friends Spanky, Alfalfa, Mary Ann, and Stymie try to leave school early with the help from Buckwheat and Porky. Miss Crabtree agrees to let the four kids go, forcing them out of her surprise ice cream cake party for the class. Disappointed rascals head over to their tree house located next to Grandma's bakery to begin rehearsing for an upcoming talent show. The Rascals have their a kind of a band, which Spanky decides to call The International Silver String Submarine Band. The band plans on playing Sonny & Cher's "I Got You Babe" for the talent show but they sound terrible. Alfalfa suggests making the performance better by getting Darla- the girl he likes - to sing the song with him... of course, that is when the real trouble begins!

I won't be mentioning the young actors, and I think with that I am doing them a favour! The acting was bad - even Doris Roberts as Grandma and Greg Germann as Ray "Big Ray" Kaye were miserable! It is designed for younger audience, but I am sad to see that somehow that younger audience is treated as almost idiotic... I will suggest to stay away!
