Review of The Little Prince (2015) by Kezia M — 05 Dec 2015
After watching The Little Prince, I now fully understand what people mean when they say a movie took their breath away.
Okay, history first: The Little Prince is my favorite book. Not even one of my favourites but my absolute favorite book. I have more than five copies of the book and have read the book so many times I don't remember how many times anymore.
So imagine my delight when I FINALLY got to see my favorite book in the big screen.
The Little Prince tells the story of a pilot who gets stranded in the desert and meets a young boy who tells him his story. The movie decides to stay true to this but also adds its own story: the pilot is now an old man and tells his story to a young girl. Both stories complement each other and are seamless in its telling.
Everything about it was just so so so delightful. The animation? Absolute eye candy. The characters? Stay deep in your heart and linger there long after the movie ends. The story? So true and genuine. How is it possible that The Little Prince, a fantasy written ages ago, can feel so REAL today?
There were moments in the movie where I had such a hard time breathing. This was because of how beautiful the scene was; how magical it all was. Movies like this are why I visit the cinema in the first place: they're able to combine a story, characters, visuals, soundtracks, etc. and make something unforgettable. The team behind The Little Prince was obviously very inspired by the story: never once does it feel like a money grab; instead, it feels like a love letter, to Antoine de Saint-Exupery and anyone who has made the book a part of their lives.
But the best part of TLP is how real and genuine it all feels. The movie came so timely. Though a bit exaggerated, nobody can deny the truth the movie speaks: how growing up results to forgetting, how people make a living but not a life, and how we forget what is essential.
TLP is both a different experience reading and watching, and I'm happy it's become such a huge part of my life. I think it's something everyone can relate to.
Do yourself a favor and watch The Little Prince. And if you haven't read it, buy yourself a copy. And read it over and over again. Take its meaning to your heart.
Find what is essential.
