Review of The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning (2008) by Erin L — 01 Nov 2008
SNORE!
While superior to part 2, I think they rushed this both in story and music department.
The songs are so hideously slow and boring I found myself falling asleep, but the movies plot is that music is forbidden, so when Ariel discovers it... aren't you supposed to feel HAPPY with her?
Oh god, all the songs were of Cd-filler quality and I'm sure they composed them in 3 seconds.
Sometimes I felt like plugging my ears!
I can understand why Triton banned music if they only composed crappy music in Atlantica!
I also hate what they did with Flounder's personality.
As this is a prequel, shouldn't he be a scaredy, whiny guppy as in the first movie?
Oh no, here we have HIP Flounder.
"Yo homies, whazzup? Bring da ladies to da party!!! WHOOOO!!!".
I'm not kidding, my jaw almost fell to the floor.
The movie was also so extremely depressing.
Everybody is in a bad mood, and anybody in a good mood gets it ruined by somebody else in a bad mood.
Or they find something that makes them upset.
The movie just didn't feel very Disney.
Even the "funny" character was so dull and depressing I wanted to claw my eyes out.
The only time I actually chuckled or laughed was when Attina says "nobody is happy" and you see the evil woman dancing and singing cheerfully.
I actually thinks she was the most cheerful out of all characters in the movie.
The story also seemed so ODD. Triton's wife, Athena, loves to sing. He even gives her a music box with "their song" to show he loves her.
But when the pirates, I dunno, kill her?
Then he bans music in all Atlantica.
Obviously she must die in some way so that she wouldn't be in the first movie, I would rather have seen a story about Athena becoming terminally ill and how the family spent the last time with her.
Singing with her and making the last time of her life filled with joy.
You know, she wouldn't need to cough blood or anything, she could just become weaker and then fall asleep forever. It just seemed so cruel to make it seem like the pirates killed Athena. You really don't see what happens, but when you just saw the humans catching fish and crabs in a net... yeah, that would give a child nightmare. You know the humans catches fish/crabs to eat them, so what should a child think that did with Ariel's mother?
Sure the movie would still be very depressing if she was terminally ill, but a lot of kids has to deal with their mothers and fathers becoming terminally ill, this could be a good chance for a family movie to take on that subject.
The only decent about this movie was the personalities of Ariel's sisters. But that alone dosen't save this movie.
