Review of The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning (2008) by Kenneth H — 04 Apr 2013
The story is entertaining enough, though it doesn't have the same kind of dramatic stakes as the stories in the first and even the second Little Mermaid films. There's some emotional weight with Athena's death and Triton's subsequent (and rather excessive) asshole personality.
We also get to see some of the family dynamic with Ariel's sisters, as well as a less uptight version of Sebastian. The villain Marina Del Rey and her weirdly laid-back henchmanatee Benjamin were fairly weak characters.
What I don't understand is how Marina managed to get into the underground music club; we see her following Ariel to the club's entrance, and then when we see her again she's already inside the club, but how did she get past the club's, um, bouncer, so to speak?
