Review of The Little Mermaid (1989) by Bryan M — 23 Jun 2013
This movie will always be remembered as a classic. Usually, Disney movies just have all happy and carefree plots. What makes this movie unique, is that it breaks away from it's own developed cliche.
Beginning as a lighthearted plot, it eventually takes a dark and sinister twist. Some disney movies have done this before, but this one in particular had been darker than most. The plot is really well developed and executed, with it's fair share of jokes, here and there.
But, the best part of this movie would be the emotional value. Ariel (Jodi Benson), the protagonist of the story, is a mermaid who has a fascination with the human culture, and the way people live. She eventually makes a deal with the antagonist, Ursula, who grants here humanity, under the condition that she must make a guy fall in love with her, and kiss her before three sunsets.
Just failing to complete this goal by mere seconds, her curse is activated. This dark twist is what really gets you into the movie, watching how well it's executed. The first song of the movie, "Part of Your World", is possibly one of the most memorable songs in the movie.
If that song doesn't make you feel nostalgic, or at least capture your emotions, then you need to listen to it again. I really like this movie, and I'd watch it again, just to give you a more detailed review of it.
