Review of The Little Mermaid (1989) by James S — 03 Jul 2014
One of the great things about an animated film is that you can bring in settings that would otherwise make no sense. This allows for a lead character who is a mermaid, and sidekicks who are talking crabs, fish, and seagulls. String it together with some humans, and you get a story about headstrong youth and the consequences of your choices.
The best parts of the film are the musical numbers. Each advances that plot and shows off the talent of the vocal actors performing them. The rest of the film merely sports decent voice acting, with nothing standing out (with the exception of Pat Carroll, who has some great range).
While this is still a great offering from Disney, it lacks some of the fast-paced punchiness that some of their other films offer. That's the difference between a great film and a superb one.
